Dolomite란. 

백운석(白雲石)·고회석(苦灰石)이라고도 한다. 화학성분은 CaMg(CO₃)₂이다. 탄산석회와 탄산마그네슘이 1:1로 복탄산염을 이룬다.

단, 마그네슘의 일부는 철이나 망가니즈로 치환되는 경우가 많다. 마름모 결정을 나타내며 결정면은 다소 만곡되어 있다. 흔히 안장

모양 또는 장미 봉오리 모양의 집합을 이룬다. 입상(粒狀) 또는 치밀질의 집합체로 된 괴상(塊狀)을 이루는 것도 있다. 굳기는 3.5~4,

비중은 2.8~2.9이다. 마름모 방향으로 완전한 쪼개짐이 있다. 흰색·회색이거나 또는 분홍색·노란색·갈색 등을 띠며, 때로 녹색을 띤다.

투명 또는 반투명하고 유리 광택이 있는데 결정은 때로 진주 광택이 난다.

방해석과 비슷하나 약간 무겁고, 묽은 염산에 의한 발포도(發泡度)가 방해석보다 약하다. 석회암을 구성하는 방해석 전체가 돌로마이

트화한 것도 있지만 일부만 돌로마이트화한 것도 많다. 석회암의 일부가 돌로마이트화한 것을 돌로마이트석회암이라고 부른다.
